A University of California - Davis Project
UCD SEEDS, Strategies for Ecology Education, Diversity and Sustainability: Diverse People for a Diverse Science.
UCD SEEDS would like to see more students involved in restoring ecosystems around the area of Davis and also teaching k-12 students how to become more involved and aware in their community. By participating in our yearly events, such as the BIOBLITZ, we hope to spread interest in ecology and also have a survey of the biodiversity in the area.Who is involved?
UCD Students of all ages are involved. From undergraduates to graduates students that serve as our mentors. Professors from both the ecology and environmental science are also involved and very active in our club. When will the project happen?
April 2013Where will the project happen?
Our main project will be the BIOBLITZ next year. It is planned to occur in sync with our sister chapters, most likely April 2013.Why does this project matter?
This project matters because it is a great way for UCD students to become connected with community members as well as local scientists. As global change is occurring, it is more crucial than ever to have a good survey of the local biodiversity. It is also crucial that this be an ongoing project, in order to have data sets over the years to see if there are any trends. Educating the public in environmental awareness is also very important, since it takes a community effort to implement change. How will the funds be used?
Our club intends to use the funds for both our BIOBLITZ next year, but also to support ecology related programs in local schools. It would be great to have k-12 students come out to our BIOBLITZ and learn how to acquire data, then present what they learned to their classmates. Funds would be used for advertising to local schools, food during the event, shirts promoting the event, tools for community members to use to collect insects or other animals, and for bringing ecology projects to local schools.Contact info?
